amidst the chaos

Hearing God’s voice.
This is something that I have learned to appreciate and expect here in Thailand, but it hasn’t always come easily.

A lot of the time, I think that our mental picture of hearing God’s voice looks a little something like this: Moses and the burning the bush.  Let’s all be honest, hearing God rarely comes in the form of a loud booming voice.

God won’t always throw Himself in front of you.  Often times, His voice comes in a still, small whisper.  This was a hard concept for me to grasp, especially since there are very few still moments here.

For a while, I wrestled with thinking that I couldn’t hear God’s voice and that I didn’t know what it sounded like.  Both of those were lies, but they slipped into my mind as truths on more than one occasion.

A huge desire of mine was that God would give me ears to hear Him even in all this craziness.

“Papa, I feel like I can’t hear You.  Life is too loud.  When will I get to have time alone with just You?  Life is too busy.  I feel like I am too distracted to hear You.  Life is too chaotic.”

Soon I realized that I had just described life in America: loud, busy, and chaotic

The time that I have spent trying to hear God’s voice more clearly was not to better prepare me for our ministry here, it was to better prepare me for the States.  He was equipping me for America.  He was teaching me how to really hear His voice amidst the chaos so that when I return to the chaos of America, His voice will be loud and clear to me.  What a blessing.  He was equipping me in a way that I didn’t even know I needed equipping.

Let me be cliché for a moment: learning to hear God’s voice amidst the chaos was not easy, but was worth all the work.
daily asking for ears to hear // intentionally choosing to listen // learning the sound of His voice by reading the Word // declaring that I do, in fact, hear His voice // small, but greatly impactful steps // trusting in the Lord
Hearing His voice.
victory.

I will hear what God the LORD will say; for He will speak peace to His people, to his godly ones; but let them not turn back to folly.
Psalm 85:8
