A Smile Is A Smile. Thai Or English.

A quote that has popped into my head since I have been here is that “a smile is something that is truly understood regardless of the language.” This is so completely true. We often get so caught up in going here and going there, in living life, that we fail to see the people around us. The people next to us on the sidewalk or the person standing behind us at Tim Hortons (some Canada love! )that need the smile, need someone to just say hey. As you walk down Bangla road you are bombarded by all these men attempting to sell you all sorts of evil. But if you watch how everyone...

The enemy is losing his grip!

Our house is near the Bang wad dam here in Kathu and today for those of us that were left at the house we went prayer walking to the dam. As silly and frivolous as this may seem it is something that is desperately needed.             You see there is a shrine on the side of the mountain overlooking the dam. For years the young people were sent here to have sex because of the favor and fertility powers that this shrine had. About 6 months ago they started sending teams to do prayer walks on the dam....

Motos for Beginners

A little comic relief for the chaotic roads of Thailand… The Kangaroo A small child is seated either on the front of the moped seat or in a basket in front of the seat.  One adult figure will be riding and driving behind them, giving the illusion of a momma kangaroo with a baby in her pouch.   Total Bromance Usually seen in Patong.  Two bros will be sharing a moped, while still trying to look cool, which is obviously impossible.   The Fanny Pack A mother is holding her child on the moped in front of her or beside her with one arm around their waist and driving with...

My God is good like that

Today we went to a Thai church service. I wasn't really sure what to expect but all i know is it was beautiful. Only about 0.7% of Thai people are Christians so to even have this opportunity is an extreme blessing. The service was by the beach with about 10-15 thai people and a few girls from our team. They welcomed us and we all sat in a circle while they tried to learn our names (that is always interesting). They gave a few of us instruments to play and i got maracas! So obviously i got down with those bad boys! Then they gave us song books which had just recently been translated...

The Aroma of Heaven

I’m almost certain that Thailand is caught in some kind of vortex of space and time. Even though it’s been just a little over one week here, enough has happened to fill a hundred weeks.   I’ve found that I’m in a place where I’m learning the different ways in which God speaks to people. I grew up with the idea that there was some kind of unspoken set formula or protocol that God uses to speak; as if the Creator himself has no room for creativity in the way in which he speaks to his own children.   A couple girls and I went prayer walking down Bangla...

This is Worship.

The darkness of Bangla Road is unfathomable.  It is almost suffocating at times.  Basically, it is a short road by the beach that has become this major tourist attraction.  Over 250 bars crowd this space, one after another.  There are about 6 “bar girls” at every bar.  They wear next to nothing and dance on poles while men shamelessly stare and touch them.  There are glass boxes above the bars where women dance to lure people in.  At first glance it looks as though everyone is enjoying themselves, but once you look longer, you notice so many...
