We are half way through our journey here in the beautiful Phuket, Thailand. Since we have been here a few weeks there are a few things that become a bit monotonous, as does anything, as it becomes daily life.
Phrases like “what a surprise chicken and rice!” and “because it’s friggin’ Thailand” have become a part of our daily conversations in response to meals, cold showers, morning meetings and a lack of AC and a dryer, just to name a few. Don’t get me wrong we are having an amazing time on this adventure there are just some things that come with missions work and all you can do is laugh and joke about it. So obviously in a house of 25+ women who are very fluent in sarcasm this is a natural response for us.
As we were all making our way down stairs tonight for dinner our noses were filled with the smell of tomato sauce and our jaws dropped. Surely this was some sort of cruel joke. We would smell spaghetti sauce and then open the lid to find tomato smothered chicken and rice…. right? Wrong. We opened the lids to find the glorious sight of cooked noodles and spaghetti sauce, you can imagine the pure glee of 25 western girls sitting down at their Thai dinner table to a meal as familiar and nostalgic as spaghetti.
Sitting here, typing this blog with my very pleased appetite I can personally say it was delicious! Sure it tasted like spaghetti out of a chef Boyardee can but come on its Thailand, you take what you can get. A lot of our team has been hit hard this week with homesickness and it has just been made worse by the reminder of the foreignness of our surroundings. Jesus heard our prayers and delivered a helping hand with our spaghetti tonight! Yeah sure we might have gone a tad overboard and gorged ourselves on the familiar food but needless to say it was worth!
Now I’m sorry for those of you that were expecting a serious God moving mountains kind of blog post. One thing you learn when you are on the mission field is to take joy in the little things…. like spaghetti in Thailand : )
