God > Ambivalence

I am trying. I am trying to understand the Buddhists. But the fact is the Buddhists do not know themselves.   They pray, they bow, they kneel before these statues. And yet they claim it is not worship. They sing praise to Buddha,“O Blessed One, Shakyamuni Buddha,? Precious treasury of compassion, ?Bestower of supreme inner peace, You, who love all beings without exception,? Are the source of happiness and goodness;? And you guide us to the liberating path.” And yet they claim he is not a god. They ask and pray to their gods for help. And yet they claim they take no refuge...

Free people free others (Feedback Really Works)

God is full of surprises. When I signed up for this trip, I thought that as soon as I went to the bars in the red light district my team and I would see women freed from their captivity. Its been over a week since my team and I have arrived in Thailand and to be quite honest its felt like we haven't been doing too much. I am thankful that God has a much bigger vision then I do. I came to Thailand to see God set the captives free and it turns out that He also wants to free me of things that have held me in captivity. For awhile, I didnt feel like people really understood how I felt...

Ignorance and Bliss

If there's one thing I've learned after a week in Thailand, it's that I don't really know much at all. I don't know how getting all my hair chopped off by a woman who didn't speak a word of English (okay, that's an exaggeration, she knew one word- "cut") could turn out to be such a wonderful expression of the freedom I have in Christ, and how God could continue to use it to challenge my standards of beauty and the things I often run after to feel like I'm enough.  I don't know if I'll ever be able to transition back...

Waterfalls, Temples, Slums, etc.

We've only been here a little more than a week? Really? It seems like so much longer. In this week I've Discovered a love of Thai pants and bought 4 pairs (they are just so comfy) Met some awesome Thai friends who are my age and gotten to hang out with them a lot Suffered from dehydration and learned that the cure for that is to actually drink enough water Spent almost all of my money buying the delicious smoothies here at Zion (living above a cafe is not good for my wallet) Gotten closer to a group of strangers than I ever thought was possible in such a short time Learned so...

You make me come alive!

From the mundane of the everyday to the once-in-a-lifetime experiences, the past 48 hours has brought my heart to life! Here’s why: I worshipped and got to hang out with World Racers, YWAMers, High School youth groups, a multinational missions organization, and other Jesus-loving world changers. I drank Thai tea. I went to a slum and played soccer (fairly well, actually). Though not a word of English was spoken, more love and joy was shared than nearly any conversation I’ve ever had! I had time to begin my CS Lewis books. I watched children have the most fun I’ve...

Same same, but very different

Last Tuesday afternoon I went on a prayer walk with two of my teammates.  Basically we asked the Lord to lead us where He wants and we prayed along the way.  I had an interesting thought at this point. “Last Sunday was a festival.  Today if we find someone at the temple it must be because they are really looking for something.  Those who just do it to pay their dues went on Sunday, so they probably don’t feel the need to go there today.  Let’s go to the temple.” Off to the temple we went in search of who we were meant to talk to. At the...
