Last night we were able to do our first "unofficial" ministry. Every other night, we will be able to go to the back alley behind our building and play with the neighborhood kids. They range from toddlers to 14 year olds and have more joy than anyone I have ever witnessed. The moment we stepped out there, they just ran to you with open arms and big grins. My little girl, Tully, had so much life in her. She was such a breath of fresh air. At one point, she leaned her head back and laughed as I held her in my arms and I noticed that her teeth were simple shells of where teeth should be. This little girl simply had stubs due to the lack of hygiene available to them. As my heart broke for her, she looked at me and picked a lily from a nearby bush and put it behind my ear. This girl knew a life where teeth and appearance were not important. Her life solely revolves around the joy she shares with others and the fun she can have with a tattered umbrella that she never put down. In my hour and a half spent with this girl, I experienced true life and true joy. Their laughter bounced off the walls of the buildings and their big toothless grins are still imprinted in my mind and bring a smile to my face. And to think for the next 6 weeks that I get to spend many nights with them is such a blessing.
