Redefining Love Part 2

Growing up in a church environment I often gained social acceptance by being the “good Christian girl”. I always tried to memorize the most verses, say all the right things and seem the most spiritual. I went to all the camps and retreats, I even would search through the not underlined passages in my Bible to try and find one to highlight so it looked like I read my Bible all the time. Somewhere along the line I became focused on trying to have the best relationship with God out of all my peers. I had put God in a box of having favorites. I thought that if I was more dedicated...

Kapunka

Kap-un-ka: or in English; thank you. I have found myself saying thank you over and over on this trip and I have had a lot to be thankful for. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to spend the past three months loving on the Thai people and growing close to the girls on my team. To say that my time here was good would be an understatement. I have been stretched in many ways. I have learned many new things about the Thai culture and about life in general. I now know what Taro tea is and I know firsthand what “songkran” is all about. I worked in a café for the first time...

Done Not Listening

I'm done not listening. This morning two of my teammates and I embarked on our morning prayer walk through the Red Light District. As we walked I began to pray that I would live in the Spirit today, and I asked God to lead, direct, and speak to me. As we were walking we passed a bar where a few friends of ours work; recently we have been having problems with some girls not wanting us there. The bar was empty and closed and no one was really around. Immediately, I knew I had to pray over the bar. I asked my teammates, we crossed the street and sat at a table outside. Our team leader;...

Thailand Actually

Between the pictures of our fun experiences on Facebook and our blog posts containing specific events or thoughts, our team (or myself at least) has received a lot of “So what are you actually doing there?” So here's what a day as Team Thailand looks like: (many combinations of activities, ministries and teammates every day) Zion Cafe- This is the cafe which we live above, and is owned by Emmi, the director of our ministries and host. We help the Thai girls that work here full-time with delivering orders, busing tables and washing dishes. Our purpose in the cafe is really to...

What if missions didn’t suck?

I have realized that deciding to do long term missions is not a decision to have a miserable life, never have fun, and not do anything that you want ever again. It is laughable to even have that opinion but I think that many people think that if they decide to be a missionary they will be sacrificing themselves so that others can hear the Gospel and they will no longer do anything for themselves again. I have seen time and time again people that have families, take their kids to school, go out to eat, and go to movies all while on the mission field. Life will be different if you choose to...

Redefining Love: Part 1

What do we believe about love?  The world teaches that love does not have to be consuming. It teaches that love that is just full of fun and passion; It does not change our hearts.  The world teaches that love is a rite of passage- something you had to find by age 16 to have the same maturity and experience as our peers. The world teaches that the certain kind of sadness that comes from not being loved in the right way was good thing, that it gives you an interesting story.  The world teaches that love is selfless to a fault. It teaches us that the...
