“Got any shrimps?”

One of the ministries here in Chiang Mai is teaching at a local University. When they first told us about this I volunteered; I teach Sunday school back home and figured that this would be a good way to start ministry here in Thailand. On our first day of teaching me and two others in my team ventured to the school to observe the classes so we might have an idea of how teaching goes here in Thailand. As students entered the first class we could see the interested gazes at the three “falangs” or foreigners sitting in the back of the room . This wasn't your typical Sunday...

Dirty Feet

It's been about two weeks since our team arrived in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Many things that initially took adjusting to have become more normal – the smell of street food, the hot weather, the long walks, our showers being either scalding hot or freezing cold, and even our rock solid mattresses. However there's one thing that surprises all of us almost every day when we get back to the room. Our feet are always disgustingly dirty. Sometimes it's clear why our feet are dirty if we spend a few hours playing in a field with slum kids, or if we walked an especially dirty...

One step closer

As I walked up and down the streets of the red light district of Chiang Mai I prayed for the girls that work day after day selling themselves to foreigners that go there for the prominent sex tourism. I see young Thai girls walking with older white males, I see bars that advertise women as a product, and I feel the emptiness of the lifestyle of these women. As I pray, I sometimes get songs that come to mind and I believe that God places songs on my heart as a way of speaking to me especially while prayer walking areas with a lot of prostitution. Today the song “A Thousand Years”...

I don’t even know your name.

Airports are cool, and I have seen quite a few of them this past year. Getting on a full airplane to a faraway place makes me wonder what the other people are up to that are on the same plane as I am. What are their plans? Are they going on vacation? Are they going somewhere for work? Are they going to visit family? Sometimes I get to talk to people at airports or on airplanes and ask them what they are doing and where they are going and it is always so interesting to hear their stories. I was charging my phone in the middle of the atrium at the Atlanta airport like a sitting duck with...

Little Texas

All anyone could say about my upcoming trip to Thailand was that it was going to be a "life changing experience". After hearing that about 100 times, I became numb to not only the words, but also the idea. I knew that I was about to undergo something incredibly new and different, but it was more of a concept rather than reality. After a forty hour travel period, reality soon began to set in. With stomachs stuffed full of airplane food and exhaustion way past setting in, an eleven hour bus ride was not sounding too tempting. However, when a double decker "party"...

Satan bought me a Coke

I went out to the bar street expecting to do the same thing I do every night. Love the bar girls. But Satan had a different plan for me. He thought he had my night planned, but little did he know I wasn’t about to go down without a fight! It's a long story about how a demon possessed man stared into my soul with the intention to “put me in fetal position, in a black ditch too scared to get up,” but that isn't the part of the story I want to share with you. I want to share the part where Christ took over my thoughts even when I couldn’t...
