The Light Hurts My Eyes!

Waking up to the light being turned on without warning to “Cover your eyes!” can be the worst way to wake up. Perhaps it’s easier to relate to the squinty-eyed, “Agghhh, it’s SO BRIGHT!” feeling by remembering how it feels to take your sunglasses off on a bright day… or perhaps switching on the light during a mid-night bathroom trip, or when the theater lights come on at the end of a movie… I think you get my point. The light HURTS your eyes and for a moment, you are blinded. Light is a beautiful thing. It quenches darkness and no...

Beyond the Storm

For the last few weeks I have been doing a bible study through the book of Job. Maybe you have heard of Job and his story of suffering. So let me take a minute to tell you of my own story. Long story short, I have suffered. I do not say this out of self-pity. I just have no other word to describe my journey. I have had daily headaches (yes, every single day, nonstop) for eight years now. With this I was diagnosed with a disease called Fibromyalgia. Maybe you have seen commercials with old people saying something like, “I was living with pain, all over.” Yup, that’s me, 20...

Home is wherever I’m with You

We have open mic nights here at Zion café every Friday.  This night usually consists of all of us girls singing terrible renditions of our favorite karaoke songs while our Thai friends sit and laugh. I actually really love it because I get to sing Disney princess songs. Shocking, I know.                 Last Friday, the night was winding down and 2 of our girls, the lovely Sarah and Savannah, hopped up to sing...

Wait, what just happened?

Let me just start off saying God has the greatest sense of humor ever. This will come up again later, so make sure you don't forget. This whole trip I've been hoping and praying to experience a healing. Since being here I've been put in several situations where I've prayed for healing. I  prayed for 1 blind woman, 1 mentally insane man, and the cutest sick baby I've ever seen.  And no matter how many words I said, no matter how bad I wanted it to happen, no matter how much I wanted God to show up in this mighty way I never saw it happen. Not once. Zip,...

I leaned back

When people started to let the elephant pick them up, a lot of thoughts ran through my mind. "Is this safe?" "Will I fall?" "Will this cost extra money?" Unfortunately, I didn't know the sure answer to any of these questions. All I could do was sit back and watch others as they slid off the elephant trunk laughing and full of obvious enjoyment and pleasure. "Whelp," I decided, "I want to try it, too.  People are having way too much fun to miss out." So I walked over to the elephant, deciding that it was worth the risk. ...

Hospital Conversations & A Heart of Contradictions

Note: I realize this blog is pretty long, but it's worth it if you'll hang in there with me!    It’s happened before-just a little stomach flu or food poisoning…nothing to worry about. Little did I know that this seemingly harmless sickness was the beginning of a three day escapade in the hospital, followed by a yet to be determined amount of days resting at our guesthouse. Skipping the medical details (you’re welcome), suddenly Alys, Sarah, and I were walking to the main road to flag down a tuk-tuk in order to take us to the ER, where they took my...
