When You Realize the Irony of Jesus as a Carpenter

I had a friend in my small-group at North Park first semester who has been blogging for a couple of years. She has amassed well over 500 blog posts in that short time. We are friends on Facebook and it seems that every time I scroll down my newsfeed I am assaulted (okay, that may be a grievous misuse of the word) by her contemplative, imaginative, beautifully ordinary writing. To this end, I am a horrible blogger. I fail massively at keeping my readers (another possible grievous misuse of the word) updated on my comings-and-goings. I complained about this to my friend Ethan over the summer...

Beauty Awaits

For the confidentiality of those written about, I have only used a letter to identify them rather than their full name. For the last month, our team has had the privilege of living with and working alongside eleven beautiful women who have intentionally left the bars to pursue a relationship with Jesus and participate in the program for them through Samaritans Creations. Being with them so much, we are able to continually pour love into their lives. It is amazing to hear some of their stories and how God has changed their lives in such large ways. Our team has, thus far; made an order of...

Walking in Desire

Psalm 37:4 “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 40:8 “I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart.”   I desired to be a full-time missionary living abroad. I went on the World Race. I desired to work with an international mission’s organization.I worked for Samaritan’s Purse. I desired to go to Thailand. I am in Thailand. I desired to lead and minister to missionaries. I am leading short-term missionaries.   These are a few examples of things in which have been desires in my heart...

Until Night is No More

As the sun rises over the earth, darkness fades.  Rays of light penetrate the shadows; they will not last. The blanket of black that had once covered the city now hides in the alleys, under bricks; it hides behind my small frame, clinging to my feet.       My sin is like this feeble shadow, struggling for a place to hide amongst the glory of my precious Savior. This can either lead me to crouch with my sin, frantically trying to cover it, or I can stand tall and let every trace of it be burned off by the light.      At night,...

A New Day-to-Day Adventure

So, I’m in Thailand.  I really want to tell everyone what's happening, but I don't know where to start.  Here's my try: It's different than I expected it would be. Instead of getting thrown into some big grand adventure my team and I have been thrown into a day-to-day life. We wake up. We eat cereal. We have a time to study the bible with the Thai women that live here. We teach English to some lovely Korean missionaries. The Thai women help us cook lunch. We help make dolls to raise money for the ministry.  We get to teach the women English and they help...

Let us dance!

"Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with tambourine and harp." Psalm 149:3 As we approached the gate I felt the heaviness, but we went onward. As we entered the smoke from the incense was nearly suffocating. I saw a man throwing water all over his body and then scrubbing it all with much force. The idols were exalted with flowers, fruit and people. But then I saw the dancers. People could bring an offering to their gods and the dancers would dance for their gods. I watched them do their routine with such sadness and emptiness in their eyes.   I...
