Reality Check

One thing that was really emphasized at training camp was that everyone needed to drop all expectations for their upcoming trip. I had absolutely no idea what to expect, therefore no expectations, right? Wrong. For the past three and a half weeks I have been trying to figure out why this trip is so different than I imagined when I wasn't even sure what to expect coming here.  When I originally heard the word "expectations" I was thinking more along the lines of living conditions, food, ministry,…ect. What I have recently come to realize however, is I did...

Same City, Two Different Worlds

How can there be so much darkness in a city that has so much beauty? As we’ve been doing afternoon bar ministry and prayer walking the red light district, it’s hard to ignore the dark feeling the area has. It’s hard to ignore the white males sitting in the bars waiting for the night to begin. It’s hard to ignore the girls setting up the bars knowing their night is going to be terrible. 45 minutes away from the heart of Chiang Mai we were able to see God’s amazing light and beautiful creation.      A few days ago we had the wonderful opportunity...

Racing to the finish line

Make a list and check it twice! This is not just for Christmas; it is for every day of my life. To do lists and accomplishing goals give me a direction and a sense of purpose for each day. I grew up writing every school assignment down in my assignment notebook and crossing it off my list when I had completed it. As I started to take on more responsibilities in college through work, volunteering, my participation in organizations, and my classes every meeting, deadline, and thing I wanted to accomplish was written down. This system kept me organized and on task so I could use my time to be...

Meet Team Thailand

Happy Valentine's Day from Thailand! With all of this love in the air, I thought I would share some of ours. To say friendship came easily tfor our team would be an understatement. Comfort and closeness were immediate after meeting each other on the first day of training camp (nearly four weeks ago)! We enjoy getting to know each other more each day and I hope as you learn more about us you will grow to love our team as much as I do! God has blessed each of us with eight new friendships and I look forward to serving next to these women for the next few months and continuing our...

More Than Just a Piece of Gum

Back at home we are used to giving gifts just on special occasions like Birthdays and Christmas. Anything other than that seems unnecessary. Giving gifts is a huge part of the Thai culture. It’s a way for them to say, “let’s be friends”. One part of our ministry is going to the slums and playing with the kids there. The language barrier has definitely been noticed during this time because they know very little English or none at all. The interacting doesn’t stop there though. Whether it’s playing soccer, jumping rope or dancing the smiles never end....

Hollow Eyes

Hollow eyes stared back at us as we continued our prayer walk down the Red Light District. It was a young Thai woman, straddling the back of a white man’s motorbike. Her light sweater was pulled loosely around her shoulders as she continued looking at me. Her eyes spoke volumes she would never voice. Pain…anger…fear…shame; all of that wrapped below the surface of a nice smile. Those unspoken words haunted me the rest of the day. How could any man buy a woman for pleasure? How could any woman be enslaved not only physically and sexually but also by their own...
