Bar Ministry

For the next two months we will continue to live in Chiang Mai, two blocks               from the red light district. The street is full of bars where women, children, and ladyboys can be purchased as easily as a bottle of beer.  It’s sad that we live right around the corner from such a dark place; yet being so close brings home how real it is. In the low season (right now), there are 5,000 people ‘working’ in the red light district; during high season that number increases to 20,000. Our team goes into the bars with the goal of...

Do you truly know them all?

Growing up I’ve always learned about the trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit- we’ve learned about it over and over again in church but have you really experienced all three? I thought I have, but let me tell you, I have not. The Holy Spirit and all it entails means so much more than just praying. Ive learned how dynamic the Holy Spirit is and how real it is in the past month or so; we have been reading through John and Proverbs together and I love the way John describes the Holy Spirit, he says: “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will...

Reforestation

Over the last month our team has had the opportunity to participate in monk chat.  We try to go once or twice a week, sometimes talking to the same monks, and sometimes talking to new ones. Either way, we build friendships with them, talking about mutual interests, and they have the chance to practice speaking English.  Many of the monks at this Wat (temple) are between 19 and 25, and studying English at the Buddhist University there.  Through conversations with them, I’ve learned more about Buddhism and have had a few chances to talk about the bible and Christianity....

You Da Boss

I was sitting in worship one night before going out into bar ministry and this is what HE told me…. Take both of your hands and put them up, in front of your face. When you look at them, you will notice that everything behind them is blurry. I was sitting there doing this and Jesus told me to only worry about the things that he placed right in front of me. Everything else was blurry to me for a reason but it is okay because he can see the big picture. I am not in control! The world is not in control! GOD IS IN CONTROL. I am done living my life thinking I am the driver. I have been...

Confessions of a Stubborn Child

Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders, let me walk upon the waters, wherever you would call me…     I fell in love with that song the moment I heard it at training camp about a month ago. I felt that it expressed everything I wanted to say to God in one 8 minute 56 second song and it quickly became my sincere prayer. However as fantastic as it sounded to have God whisk me away to some beautiful place where I could trust Him completely, I quickly realized that it was easier said than done. God was fully capable, to be sure. But this request, no...

City Life

We've been in Thailand for two and a half weeks now, and I'm loving it! There are quite a few differences between Chiang Mai and home, so I'd thought I'd share some of those with you. Crossing the road can be challenging as most intersections don't have stop signs or traffic lights unless it's a major road. Sidewalks exist but often aren't designed to walk on; or if they are people park mopeds on them. And sometimes people drive on sidewalks.  It's hot. And humid. And rainy. Get used to it. Bug spray is more important than sunscreen. Tattoos...
